Moose Jaw, SK – A late goal by Tyler Maxwell with under three minutes to play was enough to force extra time but the Oil Kings would fall short with a 4-3 shootout loss in Moose Jaw on Wednesday night. The Oil Kings found themselves in a dogfight on Wednesday in the second of a four game swing through the East Division. Plenty of back and forth action in the first as the Oil Kings outshot the Warriors 11-6 but found themselves down 1-0 going into the second period. A wild second period came to a furious end with three goals in the final five minutes. The Oil Kings scoring leader Michael St. Croix notched his team leading 20th goal of the season on the power play to make it a 1-1 game. Minutes later Rhett Rachniski was able to sneak home his 12th of the season as he shot an odd angle shot that handcuffed goaltender Luke Siemens to make it 2-1 Oil Kings. But the Warriors would bounce right back with an equalizer with 18 seconds to play in the period that went to review, but remained a goal to make it 2-2 going into the third.
The Warriors looked to have put the game away with a late goal by Brett Lyon with three minutes to play. But the Oil Kings showed resiliance as Maxwell took a pretty pass on the rush from Dylan Wruck and finished to tie the game with 2:20 remaining in the third. Maxwell would then add the only shootout goal of the night for the Oil Kings after an OT period solved nothing.
Edmonton’s overall record moves to 24-9-1-3 on the year with 52 points as they continue to occupy top spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference. Goaltender Laurent Brossoit made 31 saves in the loss, the Edmonton power play went 3 for 1 on the night while the penalty kill held the Warriors to 1 for 6 with the man advantage.
Next up the Oil Kings continue with the third game of this four game road trip through the East division with a Friday night match up against the Brandon Wheat Kings. All games this season will be broadcast live on the TEAM 1260 and streamed live at WHL.ca.
