Oil Kings Extend Streak to Six
Moose Jaw, SK – Trevor Cheek notched a pair of goals to lead the Oil Kings to a 4-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday. After some early setbacks, the Oil Kings ended their eight game road trip with an impressive 6-2-0-0 record. The Oil Kings are on a six game winning streak and will return to the friendly confines of Rexall Place this week.
Edmonton has amassed 103 points and have secured home ice advantage through the first three rounds of the WHL playoffs. The Oil Kings are just four points back of the Portland Winterhawks in the race for the overall WHL regular season title.
Cheek continued his dominance of the Warriors this season with the two goal effort. The native of Vancouver, WA posted a five point night against the Warriors in late January. With a pair of goals, the 20-year-old forward became the fourth Oil Kings forward this season to reach the 30 goal plateau.
Cheek’s first goal of the night opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the first period. This marks the fastest goal to start a game in Oil Kings’ modern franchise history. Braydon Point notched the lone Moose Jaw goal in the dying minutes of the first to tie the game 1-1.
Edmonton would answer midway through the second period. Dylan Wruck made a nice play on Cheek’s second goal to take home his own piece of franchise history. Wruck’s 61st helper of the season broke Michael St.Croix’s single season record set in 2011-12.
After Curtis Lazar notched his 36th goal of the season, St.Croix would add his team leading 37th on an early third period power play. The goal was St.Croix’s 20th power play goal of the season as he continues to lead the WHL in that category. Oil Kings’ goaltender Tristan Jarry posted 27 saves to raise his record to 17-7-0-0.
Edmonton’s closing the gap on modern franchise records when it comes to wins. Edmonton’s victory raised the Oil Kings record to 48-15-2-3 on the season. Last season, the Oil Kings finished the regular season with a record of 50-15-3-4 for 107 points to claim the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the WHL regular season champion. Edmonton’s currently sitting with 103 points with 3 games remaining in the regular season.
