A Proud Hockey Tradition Returns

On the 40th Anniversary of their 1966 Memorial Cup Championship, the Edmonton Oil Kings are making a triumphant return to the Western Hockey League!

r

Patrick LaForge, President of the Edmonton Oilers, and Governor of Edmonton Major Junior Hockey, announced today that the Edmonton Oil Kings will indeed begin operating out of Rexall Place during the 2007/2008 WHL season.

r

“The history of the Oil Kings is one that many Edmontonians, and hockey fans everywhere, remember passionately,” said LaForge. “We’re pleased to announce that the Oil Kings are returning, and that a new chapter of their history is just beginning.”

r

The Edmonton Oil Kings will provide another quality hockey product to a different target audience than the Oilers. The Oil Kings will feature fast-paced action at a family-friendly price, and will give local fans an opportunity to watch the next generation of NHL stars.

r

The Edmonton Oil Kings first debuted in 1950, and spent a quarter century entertaining local hockey fans at the Edmonton Gardens. The team quickly gained a reputation as a training ground for hockey talent, with numerous alumni graduating to successful NHL careers, including Norm Ullman, Johnny Bucyk, Pat Quinn, Bruce MacGregor and Al Hamilton. Throughout their storied career, the Oil Kings battled in nine Memorial Cups, claiming two Championships in 1963 and 1966.

r

The new incarnation of the Oil Kings will utilize the team logo from the 1960’s, featuring the famous crown that originally symbolized the Queen’s coronation, with a few modern touches. The St. Georges Cross has been replaced with an oil drop, providing a link to the Alberta oil industry, as well as the teams owners, the Edmonton Investors Group. As well, nine crown jewels, on either side of the oil drop, will symbolize the nine trips to the Memorial Cup.

r

A recent ‘Name The Team’ contest clearly confirmed that the Oil Kings still have a strong following in Alberta. Over 75% of all entrants recommended that Edmonton’s new WHL team be named the Oil Kings.

r

The Edmonton Oil Kings will be announcing details on season seat sales in the coming weeks, but fans can sign up now for the Founders Club, and exclusive membership that provides numerous benefits for its members for making a three-year commitment to the team. Full details on the Founders Club can be found at www.oilkings.ca.
