Edmonton Oil Kings’ training is almost in the books for 2018.
Wednesday’s Red and White game at the Downtown Community Arena will wrap the three day main camp. It was the first chance for a new coaching staff and management team to get a close look at returning Oil Kings and Oil Kings hopefuls.
“It’s been competitive. Everyone is trying real hard,” said Ethan Cap, who is entering his third season. “I think (new staff) has helped. No one feels safe. It’s a new coach, new GM. It keeps it competitive. Everyone’s fighting for a spot.”
This is Scott Atkinson’s fourth training camp with the Oil Kings and he says he can also see a difference in the competitive nature of the camp with new eyes overlooking the players.
“Everyone is competing for a spot. No one is for sure on the team,” said Atkinson. “I think that has made things more competitive out there. It’s awesome. It shows the young guys how to play in a game situation.”
Rosters have been cut down to 40 ahead of Wednesday’s game.
Puck drop for the Red and White game at the Downtown Community Arena is 7pm and is open and free to the public.
