Edmonton, AB – Edmonton Oil Kings General Manager Bob Green announced today the team has acquired right-winger Mark Reners from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a fifth-round WHL Bantam Draft pick in 2012.
Reners is an 18-year-old from Pincher Creek, AB, who was selected by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the first round (18th overall) of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. The high selection was a result of Reners’ phenomenal season with the bantam AAA Lethbridge Golden Hawks that saw him score 99 points in just 32 regular season games to lead the AMBHL.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound forward spent the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons with the Lethbridge Titans midget AAA squad and scored 60 points in 56 total regular season games. Reners played his rookie WHL season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes last year, scoring six goals and four assists in 60 games.
He started the 2010-11 season in Lethbridge and scored six goals and five assists in 20 games before getting traded to Vancouver, where he played 11 games and scored two goals and one assist. The Oil Kings hope Reners finally realizes the potential he showed in bantam upon his arrival in Edmonton.
“We’re really excited to add Mark to our roster,” Oil Kings GM Bob Green said. “He was a top scorer at the bantam and midget levels, but just hasn’t found his spot in the WHL yet. He’s only 18 years old, though, so hopefully we can provide the right environment to bring out his scoring touch.”
Reners is flying to Edmonton on Sunday and will be in the lineup wearing #17 when the Oil Kings (20-18-0-2) battle the Kootenay Ice on Wednesday at Rexall Place for CN Hockey Hooky with a special 11:30 a.m. game time.
Tickets to every Oil Kings home game are available starting at just $15 at any Ticketmaster outlet, online at oilkings.ca, or by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625).
