Oil Kings forward Jalen Luypen signs entry-level contract with Chicago Blackhawks

Edmonton, AB – The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Edmonton Oil Kings forward Jalen Luypen to a three-year entry-level contact, the team announced earlier today.

Luypen, a Kelowna, B.C. product, was selected in the seventh round, 216th overall, by the Blackhawks in the 2021 NHL Draft.

“It was an amazing feeling when I put my signature on that piece of paper,” Luypen told Cam Moon on 630 CHED’s Oilers Now. “It’s something you dream of doing when you’re a kid in the basement playing mini-sticks and now to have that feeling for real and to have it done makes me really happy.”

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound centermen is coming off his most productive season in the WHL after setting new career highs in goals (29), assists (35), points (64) and plus/minus (+40) in 66 games during the 2021-22 WHL season.

“This year helped me a lot,” added Luypen in his conversation with Moon.  “With the team we had, it put me in a spot to play my preferred role and also a chance to improve my game as a hard-nosed, two-way forward and that’s the game I hope to be able to bring to the Blackhawks in the future.”

During the post-season, Luypen tallied nine points (4G, 5A) in 19 games helping the Oil Kings capture their third WHL Championship in modern franchise history.  During the 2022 Memorial Cup in Saint John, New Brunswick, he added three points (1G, 2A) in three games.

Luypen was selected by the Oil Kings in the ninth round, 180th overall, in the 2017 WHL Draft.  In 200 career games with the Oil Kings he has amassed 124 points (61G, 63A), 172 penalty minutes and a +57 plus/minus rating.
