The Edmonton Oil Kings (14-9-2-2) were heavy favourites on paper entering their match-up versus the Swift Current Broncos (4-18-1-1), but it was Isaac Poulter who stole the show to backstop the Broncos to a 3-2 win over the Oil Kings in front of 2,420 fans at Innovation Credit Union I-Plex on Saturday night.
It was just the third home win of the season for Swift Current, and the second win of the season for Poulter (2-5-0-0) who turned aside 29 of 31 Edmonton shots in the win.
Boston Bilous (3-4-0-1) took the loss in goal for the Oil Kings, making 19 saves on 22 shots.
The majority of the opening period was a low-shot, low-chances affair and seemed set to go into the first intermission in a scoreless tie, but instead it was Andrew Fyten who gave the Broncos the 1-0 lead, unassisted, with just 13.7 remaining in the opening frame.
Shots on goal in that opening period favoured Swift Current, 10-7.
With the Broncos on the power play Ben King notched his fifth of the season to give the home team a 2-0 lead, assisted by Max Patterson and Connor Horning, at 3:53.
Midway through the period the Oil Kings got themselves on the board as Brett Kemp took a shot from below the goal line that beat Poulter, cutting the Broncos lead to 2-1, from Trey Fix-Wolansky at 10:10.
It was a tie game just two minutes later as Ethan Cap picked up his third of the season on the power play, from Matthew Robertson and Vladimir Alistrov, at 12:11.
But just 15 seconds following the Cap goal the Broncos stole back any momentum generated by the Oil Kings, as Patterson restored the lead for Swift Current, 3-2, from King and Horning at 12:26.
Edmonton took the lead in shots on goal through 40 minutes of play, 19-17.
The Oil Kings pulled Bilous with just over a minute to play in the third period in an attempt to tie the game, but it was to no avail as the Broncos picked up their fourth win of the season, and second of the season over the Oil Kings.
Final shots on goal were 31-22, Edmonton.
Swift Current was 1-for-5 on the power play while Edmonton finished the night going 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Connor Horning (SC) (3), Isaac Poulter (SC) (2), and Max Patterson (SC) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.
Wyatt McLeod, Conner McDonald and Matthew Robertson each wore an “A” and skated as alternates to captain Trey Fix-Wolansky.
The Oil Kings return to Rogers Place on Wednesday, November 28 when they host the CHL’s top ranked Prince Albert Raiders at 7:00 PM MT.
