Matthew Robertson is headed home from the Big Apple.

The Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman was one of four players trimmed off the training camp roster of the New York Rangers Wednesday as the start of the 2019-20 National Hockey League regular season rapidly approaches.

At the 2019 NHL Draft, the Rangers selected the 6-foot-4, 198-pound product of Sherwood Park, Alta. in the second round, 49th overall following two productive seasons with the Oil Kings.

In the 2018-19 season, Robertson played a strong role on the blue line of the Central Division champions. Robertson posted 33 points (7G, 26A) in 52 games, including one power-play goal. In 16 games during the 2019 WHL Playoffs, Robertson contributed eight points (4G, 4A), including one power play goal as the Oil Kings advanced to the Eastern Conference Championship Series.

Overall, Robertson has appeared in 126 WHL regular season games, posting 58 points (14G, 44A), including two power play goals. The Oil Kings selected Robertson with the 7th overall selection at the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

Internationally, Robertson won gold at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton, AB with Team Canada. At the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Robertson led all defencemen in scoring with six points (2G, 4A) in five games and was named to the tournament all-star team. With Alberta at the 2016 WHL Cup, Robertson also claimed gold.

The move is the second boost of the day to the Oil Kings roster, as the team acquired Ethan McIndoe from the Spokane Chiefs in a trade on Wednesday.

Following a sweep of a home-and-home series against the Red Deer Rebels to begin the 2019-20 WHL regular season, the Oil Kings return to action Friday, September 27 (7:00 PM MT) when they take to the road against the Calgary Hitmen. They return to Rogers Place on Sunday, September 29 when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 4:00 PM.
